Labour announces nature and landscapes policies ahead of manifesto launch

The Labour Party has announced a raft of policies on nature and landscapes that will be included in its manifesto, expected early next week.

These include improving access to nature and green spaces, a commitment to publish a new land use framework and support for regenerative farming.  

CPRE has campaigned on all these areas and we believe the announcement is a step in right direction for the countryside. 

We’re asking our countryside to work harder than ever and we need a strategic approach to how we use our land. CPRE has long called for a land use framework so it’s encouraging to see Labour commit to delivering one. All political parties must commit to policies that meet the needs of people, planet and nature. 

We want to see strong protections for the Green Belt as well as a new generation of regional and country parks that will give people and nature more space to thrive.  

We look forward to seeing more details on Labour’s plans to enable communities to buy up derelict land and turn it into parks, to create three new national forests, to ban bee-killing pesticides, and to revive wetlands and peat bogs. 

Farmland, which makes up more than two-thirds of our countryside, is responsible for so much more than the food we eat. We welcome Labour’s commitment to support regenerative agriculture, increase diversity in crop rotation and ensure livestock and pasture are managed in a way that matches the natural capacity of the land.
